Hurricane Ike

For all those who asked, we have safely survived Hurricane Ike. Our humble abode took a direct hit passing through the eye of the storm. We fortunately were safely "hunkered down" elsewhere. All are safe. It is unclear when we will be able to reenter our home and assess the damage.
At the moment I am in southern California working on the next HackBack venture. If you need to contact me email me or call at the usual places.
Thanks for checking up on us!

This is going to be a big year for us at HackBack Media. We will be launching new immersive fiction stories as well as branching into a couple of exciting new business areas.
Thank you very much, to all those who have participated with and supported us over all these years!
Expect to have more fun than ever in 2008!

We'll be in Cali again next week. This time I'm speaking at the P2P Media Summit LA on Monday, Oct 23.
It's not directly TBH related but it should still be interesting. Pop by if you are there, I'm sure I'll leak some details about our not so stealty Privateer project.

Oh what a tangled web we weave. Well not so much a web this time. More of a world wide mist of random bits.
Believe it or not, those wily programmers actually got the OFF System to work! The Big Hack authors told me it was possible, but I thought they were just smoking...
Check out what they have done at SourceForge. It's nifty.

We got such an excellent response at the last show that we are going to do it again. You can find us at the Digital Hollywood Building Blocks conference in San Jose, August 15-17. Look us up if you are going.
Ironically, the organization is Digital Hollywood but the conference is in silicon valley AND the organization is based in New York City. Go Figure.

We're off to the 1st Annual P2P Media Summit for the next few days. Charles Baker was nice enough to invite us. I look forward to putting faces to even more of the names we've been dropping...
If you see us at the show be sure to stop and say hi! We'll be demonstrating some Douwd toys, for those in the know.

“There are no covert organizations of any kind.”
Or so I thought! It turns out that over the past few months, several players have adopted digital copyright as a political cause. Others have “shanghaied” the technical bits of the story as a personal development challenge. In general HBM encourages such things. We applaud all people who take initiative. However, The Big Hack is not necessarily an appropriate place to carry on such activities.
First, TBH is fiction. It has had a beginning, and middle. It also has an inevitable end. As such, it is no place for continuing causes. Second, this is a business. We create and market these interactive stories, so it is important that we not confuse HBM’s intellectual property with the ideas of our players. But we are not ogres, we relish the opportunity to support all players who are inspired by our stories.
We have been working with these players in re-hosting their projects to a longer term and more appropriate location. The new site for their project is http://offsystem.sourceforge.net/. In addition HBM has given permission to reference some of our trademarks and characters. We see this as an appropriate extension to our product line of sub-domain and email addresses currently marketed to players.
After all, the unique experience of interactive fiction is enhancing the story and make it your own.

Let me state categorically that, despite the rumors, HackBack Media had no influence over the Supreme Courts recent decision in MGM v Grokster. This plot twist was written into "The Big Hack" more than two years ago.
Again, "The Big Hack" is only interactive fiction. There are no covert organizations of any kind.
Given this recent decision let me also say, in defense of potential accusations, HackBack Media does not condone, support, contribute to, or vicariously benefit from copyright infringement. We *ARE* a media company and copyrighted creative works are our products too!
Sincerely,
Bob Way

Just FYI, we had a minor problem while upgrading our servers. We seemed to lose most of our postings here. We have reverted to a rather old backup. Please re-submit any questions or comments that we have not already answered.
Sorry for your inconvenience.
